Beavis and Barrel-Head is an American adult animated tv series created by Mike Judge.[2] The series follows the eponymous Beavis and Butt-Head, both voiced by Judge, a pair of teenage slackers characterized by their apathy, lack of intelligence, lowbrow sense of humour, and failure to concenter women.

The characters originated in Judge'due south 1992 curt film Frog Baseball, which was circulate past MTV's blitheness showcase Liquid Television. Afterwards MTV commissioned a full serial around the characters, Beavis and Butt-Head ran for seven seasons from March 8, 1993, to November 28, 1997.[3] [4] The series was revived with an 8th season airing on MTV from October 27, 2011, to December 29, 2011, but was cancelled a second time post-obit the season'due south conclusion. A second revival consisting of ii seasons is scheduled to release on Paramount+.[5] [6]

During its initial run, Beavis and Barrel-Head received widespread critical acclaim for its satirical, scathing commentary on lodge. The show's popularity spawned various related media, including the theatrical movie Beavis and Butt-Head Exercise America in 1996. A second film Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe has as well been announced to exist released in July 2022 on Paramount+.[7]

Premise [edit]

The series centers on two unintelligent teenage runaway couch potatoes named Beavis and Butt-Head (both voiced by Gauge) who lack social skills. They attend school at Highland High in a boondocks named Highland, located somewhere in Texas or New Mexico. If they are non at schoolhouse or out causing mayhem, they are at home watching TV, looking at pornographic magazines, or eating nachos and other junk nutrient. Beavis and Barrel-Head have little to no adult supervision and are barely literate. Both lack whatsoever empathy or moral scruples even when regarding each other, and take no hesitance to inflict serious concrete damage to each other. They will unremarkably deem an experience "cool" if information technology somehow involves heavy metallic, violence, sex, devastation, or the macabre. While inexperienced with women, they share an obsession with sex and tend to chortle whenever they hear words or phrases that could exist even vaguely interpreted as sexual or scatological. Butt-Head tends to be very emotionless and lackadaisical with regard to his conduct, whereas Beavis tends to be more "over-the-top" and extroverted (he is also shown to be somewhat more aware of social norms and certain morals than Butt-Head is, though Butt-Head seems to be somewhat more intelligent at reading and planning ahead).

Each episode features frequent interstitial scenes in which they critique music videos using commentary improvised by Estimate (much in the same way as Mystery Science Theater 3000; in flavour eight, they too commented on clips from other MTV shows such equally Bailiwick of jersey Shore and Truthful Life, plus shows from other Viacom-owned networks such equally Spike). The residual of the episodes depict the duo embarking on diverse schemes or adventures.[8] [9] The staff at Highland High are often at a loss as to how to bargain with them, and, in many episodes, Beavis and Butt-Caput skip school altogether. Their actions sometimes consequence in serious consequences (sometimes for themselves merely oft for others), for which they themselves exercise not express any remorse due to existence too stupid to understand that their actions take caused serious problems.

Episodes [edit]

Reception [edit]

Beavis and Barrel-Head are and so stupid and sublimely cocky-absorbed that the exterior world has piffling reality except as an badgerer or distraction. Information technology would exist easy to attack B&B every bit ignorant, vulgar, depraved, repulsive slobs. Of course they are. Simply that would miss the point, which is that Mike Approximate's characters reverberate parts of the society that produced them. To study B&B is to learn about a culture of narcissism, alienation, functional illiteracy, instant gratification and television zombiehood.

— Roger Ebert (1996)[10]

During its original run, Beavis and Butt-Head was MTV's highest rated testify.[11] It was ane of the most popular series when information technology premiered in 1993.[12] [13] On xiii November 2009, History.com reported "On March 8, 1993, the Music Television Network (MTV) airs the starting time episode of the animated series Beavis and Butt-Caput, which will go on to become the network's highest-rated series up to that point".[14]

Over its run, Beavis and Butt-Head received both positive and negative reactions from the public with its combination of lewd humour and implied criticism of club.[xv] It became the focus of criticism from some social critics such as Michael Medved, while others such as David Letterman and the National Review defended information technology every bit a cleverly subversive vehicle for social criticism and a particularly artistic and intelligent comedy. Either fashion, the show captured the attention of many young television viewers and is often considered a classic piece of 1990s youth civilisation and Generation Ten. Trey Parker and Matt Rock, creators of Southward Park, cite the series as an influence and compared information technology to the dejection.[16]

In 1997, Dan Tobin of The Boston Phoenix commented on the serial' humor, saying it transformed "stupidity into a crusade, forcing us to acknowledge how little it really takes to brand us express mirth."[17] In 1997, Ted Drozdowski of The Boston Phoenix described the 1997 Beavis and Butt-Head land equally "reduced to cocky-parody of their self-parody."[18] In December 2005, Tv Guide ranked the duo's distinct laughing at #66 on their list of the 100 Greatest Television set Quotes and Catchphrases.[19] In 2012, TV Guide ranked Beavis and Butt-Head as one of the top 60 Greatest TV Cartoons of All Time.[20]

Mike Estimate himself is highly critical of the animation and quality of earlier episodes, in particular the first two—"Give Blood/Claret Drive" and "Door to Door"—which he described as "atrocious, I don't know why anybody liked information technology... I was burying my caput in the sand."[21]

Controversy [edit]

The show was blamed for the death of two-yr-one-time Jessica Matthews in Moraine, Ohio, in Oct 1993. The daughter's five-yr-old brother, Austin Messner, set burn down to his mother's mobile home with a cigarette lighter, killing the ii-year-old.[22] The female parent later claimed that her son watched an episode in which the characters said "fire was fun".[22] All the same, the neighbors stated that the family did non even take cable television and would thus be unable to view the bear witness.[23] [24]

As a result, all references to fire were removed from subsequent airings and prompted the prove to a later time slot.[25] The creators found a censorship loophole and took delight in sometimes making Beavis scream things that sounded very like to his previous "Fire! Fire!" (such as "Fryer! Fryer!" when he and Butt-Head are working the late shift at Burger World) and as well having him almost say the forbidden word (such every bit in one case when he sang "Liar, liar, pants on..." and pausing before "fire"). There was too a music video where a man runs on burn in tiresome motion ("California" by Wax). Beavis is hypnotized by it and tin barely say "burn down". Yet, MTV eventually removed the episode entirely. References to fire were cut from earlier episodes—even the original principal tapes were altered permanently.[26] Other episodes MTV opted non to rerun included "Stewart's House" and "Way Down Mexico Fashion". Copies of early on episodes with the controversial content intact are rare, and the copies that exist are fabricated from home video recordings of the original broadcasts, typically on VCR. In an interview included with the Mike Gauge Drove DVD set, Judge said he is uncertain whether some of the earlier episodes still exist in their original, uncensored grade.[25]

When the serial returned in 2011, MTV allowed Beavis to use the give-and-take "fire" once again uncensored.[27] During the first video segment, "Werewolves of Highland", the first new episode of the revival, Beavis utters the word "fire" a total of seven times within 28 seconds, with Barrel-Head saying it once as well.[28]

In February 1994, watchdog group Morality in Media claimed that the death of eight-month-onetime Natalia Rivera, struck by a bowling ball thrown from an overpass onto a highway in Jersey City, New Jersey, near the The netherlands Tunnel by xviii-year-old Calvin J. Settle, was partially inspired past Beavis and Butt-Caput.[29] The group said that Settle was influenced by the episode "Ball Breakers", in which Beavis and Butt-Head load a bowling ball with explosives and drib information technology from a rooftop.[29] While Morality in Media claimed that the show inspired Settle's deportment, the instance's prosecutors did non. Information technology was later revealed by both prosecutors and the defendant that Settle did not have cable TV, nor did he watch the show.

In "Lightning Strikes", the show parodies the want to blame things on youth culture. When a reporter asks the duo why they had been flying a kite in a thunderstorm, they explicate that they had been inspired by a documentary about "some old dude with long hair and glasses". The interview continues until they mention having watched rock music videos earlier in the day; the reporter concludes (on the air) that the videos are to blame for their actions.

MTV also responded by broadcasting the programme after 11:00 p.m. and included a disclaimer, reminding viewers:

Beavis and Butt-Head are not existent. They are stupid cartoon people completely made up by this Texas guy whom nosotros hardly fifty-fifty know. Beavis and Butt-Head are impaired, rough, thoughtless, ugly, sexist, self-destructive fools. But for some reason, the petty wienerheads brand us laugh.

This was after changed to:

Beavis and Butt-Head are non role models. They're not even human. They're cartoons. Some of the things they do would cause a person to get hurt, expelled, arrested, maybe deported. To put it another way: don't try this at habitation.

This disclaimer also appears before the opening of their Sega Genesis and Super NES games likewise as their Windows game Beavis and Butt-Caput in Virtual Stupidity.[30]

They were famously lambasted by Autonomous South Carolina Senator Fritz Hollings as "Buffcoat and Beaver".[31] This later on became a running gag on the show where adults mispronounced their names. For example, ane graphic symbol on the prove, Tom Anderson, originally chosen them "Butthole" and "Joe" and believed the two to be of Asian ethnicity (describing them to the constabulary equally "Oriental"). In later episodes, Anderson uses the Hollings mispronunciation in one case and, on at least one occasion, refers to them as "Penis and Butt-Munch". President Clinton called them "Beavis and Bum-head" in "Citizen Butt-caput", as well as in the picture, where an old lady (voiced by Cloris Leachman) consistently calls them "Travis" and "Bob-head". In "Incognito", when some other student threatens to impale them, the duo uses this to their advantage, pretending to exist commutation students named "Crevis and Bung-Caput". The bully, seeing through the disguises, calls them "Beaver and Barrel-Plug". In "Right On!", when the duo appear on the Gus Baker Show, host Gus Bakery (a extravaganza of Rush Limbaugh) introduces them as "Beavis and Buffcoat".

Beavis and Barrel-Head have been compared to idiot savants considering of their creative and subversively intelligent observations of music videos. This part of the prove was mostly improvised by Mike Judge. With regard to criticisms of the two as "idiots", Judge responded that a show nearly directly-A students would non be funny.

Films [edit]

Beavis and Butt-Head Practise America (1996) [edit]

In 1996, a full-length picture featuring the duo titled Beavis and Butt-Caput Do America was released in theaters by Paramount Pictures. The film features the voices of Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Cloris Leachman, Robert Stack, Eric Bogosian, Richard Linklater, Greg Kinnear (in an uncredited role) and David Letterman (credited every bit Earl Hofert). The moving picture earned over $60 million at the domestic box office, a stiff return for a movie that price only $12 million to produce.[32]

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe (2022) [edit]

In 2008, Judge stated, "I like to keep the door open up on Beavis and Butt-Head, because information technology'due south my favorite matter that I've ever done. It's the thing I'1000 most proud of."[33] Still, he stated his reservations regarding the "year and half [to] two and a one-half years" that it would take "to exercise that right," proverb that a revival project "comes upward every iii years."[33] In 2009, while promoting his film Extract, Judge said he would like to encounter the characters on the large screen again, and that "I kind of think of them as being either 15 or in their 60s.... I wouldn't listen doing something with them as these 2 dirty old men sitting on the couch."[34]

In March 2018, Judge told Rotten Tomatoes that the idea of doing a 2d Beavis and Barrel-Head film had been brought upwardly two months prior, saying "It'due south just a thing of coming up with an thought that feels like it'due south worth doing."[35] In July 2019, Judge again reiterated interest in a potential pic, stating, "I've got some ideas. I think it would have to be something that makes information technology relevant today. I think I might've figured out a way to practice that." He farther stated that he would probably direct it.[36] [37]

On Feb 24, 2021, the Paramount+ streaming service announced a new movie based on the serial.[7]

On January 4, 2022, Judge tweeted some drawings of older versions of Beavis and Butt-Head.[38] The next month, it was announced that the film will exist released in July 2022 and would be titled Beavis and Butt-Head Practice the Universe.

Possible alive-action moving picture [edit]

In May 2008, Gauge stated that he previously hated the idea of producing a live-activeness film, only had come to believe that "possibly there's something there."[39] He too revealed that Johnny Depp had expressed interest in the role of Beavis, having imitated the character while Marlon Brando imitated Barrel-Caput during the production of Don Juan DeMarco (1995).[39] He also stated in an interview that "Seann William Scott'south kinda got Barrel-Head eyes."[xl]

In 2016, Judge told Radio Times "Maybe information technology could exist a alive-action someday", so went on to speculate that Beavis might be homeless by now.[41]

On July 28, 2016, information technology was reported that VH1 Classic was to be rebranded equally MTV Classic on August 1, 2016 on the 35th ceremony of the original MTV. With a focus on 1990s programming, Beavis and Butt-Caput were a major part of this alongside Daria and Ɔon Flux at the launch; they were too a major focus in the promotion of the re-make.[42] MTV Classic only broadcast episodes from the 2011 reboot. Notwithstanding, information technology and all non-music video programming only lasted a few months earlier existence pulled.[43]

According to TMZ, MTV had not asked Tracy Grandstaff to reprise her role as Daria Morgendorffer.[44] Later, in a Rolling Stone interview, Judge was asked if Daria was coming dorsum, and he said: "No. There'southward sort of a cameo in i episode. That'll be a surprise."[27]

Every bit in the old series, Beavis and Butt-Head are high school students who, amid other things, criticize contemporary music videos.[45] In an interview with Rolling Rock, MTV president Van Toffler said the duo volition also sentry Bailiwick of jersey Shore, Ultimate Fighting Title matches, and amateur videos from YouTube, as well as give movie reviews. "The biggest change is evidently the references are updated, information technology'due south set in modern mean solar day, and there's going to be a movie review segment," Linn said, "Otherwise they're still truthful to their prior passions."[46] [47]

John Altschuler, formerly a writer for Male monarch of the Hill, told a Rolling Stone reporter that he saw signs that Mike Judge was thinking of reviving Beavis and Butt-Head. On more than i occasion, Approximate told the writers that 1 of their ideas for an episode of King of the Hill would piece of work well for Beavis and Butt-Head; eventually he concluded, "Maybe nosotros should only really make some expert Beavis and Butt-Head episodes." Later, a Lady Gaga video convinced Van Toffler of the tenability of a Beavis and Butt-Head revival: "I felt like there was a whole crop of new artists—and what the earth sorely missed was the point of view that just Beavis and Butt-Head could bring."[46]

As role of a promotional campaign for the new serial, cinemas screening Jackass 3D opened the feature film with a 3-D Beavis and Butt-Head short subject. Months later, in a media presentation on February ii, 2011, MTV announced that the series would premiere in mid-2011. He as well said that MTV was close to selling it to another network, but information technology became "lost in deal stuff".[56] : 37m
